The Jewellery Inspector allows observation of fluorescence and phosphorescence from SW (short wave) and LW (long-wave) ultra-violet illumination. These observations can help a gemmologist determine whether a diamond or gem is synthetic, treated or natural. The colour and intensity of the fluorescence provides a useful indicator. A common test is to determine whether the SW intensity is brighter than the LW, which is suggestive of a synthetic diamond.
The Jewellery Inspector differs from the PL-Inspector in providing a larger viewing area (of 50 mm x 50 mm) and the Jewellery Inspector can also be used with a custom jewellery holder (supplied).
Using the Jewellery Inspector (see video below):
The Jewellery Inspector features ultra-violet lamps to excite any HPHT diamonds which will then phosphoresce.
The glow can be readily detected with the camera on a user's smart-phone.
