How to Design Jewelry

Jewelry design is a great way to express oneself and a wonderful hobby. The options for jewelry creation are limitless and one can even turn a profit on their endeavors. However, making that first leap into a new creative endeavor can be a bit intimidating. Follow some steps to help design and create jewelry to express yourself through this ancient and beautiful craft.

  1. Decide what kind of jewelry you want to make. Research various stones and materials to determine the medium you are initially interested in.

  2. Visit a craft store and browse through the jewelry making section. Take note of various beads, stones, leathers and other materials that catch your eye.

  3. Sketch your design ideas on paper to get a better feel for what you want the jewelry to look like. Indicate on your sketches what the materials are that you will be using and then go in search of those specific materials.

  4. Find the necessary clasping and backing for your jewelry. Purchase bracelet clasps, necklace clasps and earring backs so you can experiment with various jewelry methods.(Find some Here)

  5. Find a type of wire or chain that will be appropriate for the stone you are using, bear in mind the cost of precious metals such as gold or platinum. Consider using wire or leather to begin with to string your jewelry.

  6. Acquire other necessary tools for making jewelry such as pliers, tweezers, mandrels, scissors, wire cutters, and hot soldering tools for metallurgy work. Research various methods of jewelry making such as wire wrapping, gemstone setting, bead work and mold based jewelry making. (Great place to find Pliers/Cutters, tweezers, and Soldering tools)
